To Begin:

  1. Start with a clean sheet of white paper. We used construction paper.
  2. Squeeze a decent amount of yellow paint onto your paper plate. On a separate plate squeeze a little bit of black paint.
  3. Next, using your bubble wrap, dip the bubble side of the bubble wrap into the yellow paint. You may need to use your paintbrush to brush some of the yellow paint onto the bubble wrap.
  4. Once your bubble wrap is painted and prepped, press the painted side against the white paper. When you peel back the bubble wrap, you should be left with a circular/hexagon pattern.
  5. Next, we’ll be using our bee stamp. We were lucky enough to have a bee stamp hand-made for us, but if necessary a trip to Michael’s might save you time.
  6. For this step, you can either use stamp ink or black paint like we did. Coat your stamp in ink or paint and decorate your honeycomb painting!

Therapeutic Recreation Week

Therapeutic Recreation Week
Therapeutic Recreation Week

July 7th – July 13th

Therapeutic Recreation Week highlights the importance of engaging in activities that help with the recovery of healing people with various disabilities or illnesses. It can help keep a busy mind off of unnecessary stress that comes with having a disability.

Every day we will be providing a Therapeutic Recreational Activity for you to try with your residents at your own facility!

Recreational Therapy is used to help patients with disabilities and can even be prescribed by medical professionals as treatment, usually facilitated by a trained and certified individual. Recreational Therapy involves sports, arts, muscle relaxation techniques and even hobbies. It is designed to restore, remediate and rehabilitate a person’s level of motor functioning and independence in life activities. It promotes health and wellness as well as reduce or eliminate activity limitations.

Many rehabilitation centers and hospitals have an in-house recreation therapist who gives personalized assessments and works with a physician to create a recreational therapy plan that best suits the patient. This makes recreational therapy different than most therapies. Some interventions are individual and some are group based. But every therapy is tailored to the patient’s interests. This makes the therapy process meaningful and relevant.

Recreational Therapy is provided by qualified professionals known as Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists (CTRS). Recreational Therapists do their best to reduce depression, stress, and anxiety in their patients. They try to help them build confidence and socialize in their community.

How is Recreational Therapy Beneficial?

  • Gives Patients active, outcome-focused care
  • Enables general skill-developed treatment to home or community environments
  • Reduces the effects of disabilities
  • Provides treatment through cost-effective means
  • Addresses the whole person with a focus on enhancing independent functioning
  • Builds physical, social, cognitive and emotional domains
  • Trains people to identify and utilize community resources
  • Focuses on skills that carry over to day-to-day life

Straw Fireworks

Corwin 4th of July Straw Fireworks
Corwin 4th of July Straw Fireworks

4th of July is just a few weeks away! Have you made plans? Maybe you’re having a cookout, shooting off some fireworks, or heading to the beach. Whatever you do, you’re not going to want to miss out on this great motor skills activity! Set up your own Straw Fireworks Painting Station with just these few materials:

You Will Need:

  • Red, white and/or blue paper
  • Red, white and blue paint
  • Straws
  • Scissors
  • Paper Plates

To Begin:

  1. To set up your very own straw painting station you’ll want to start by prepping your straws for your residents or community
  2. To create your firework “stamp” start by cutting your straw down the middle. You should have two straw “flaps.” Continue cutting each “flap” in half until they’re too small to cut anymore. Fold your “flaps” down. You’ll want to make sure the “flaps” are all equal length. This will help the stamp lay down flat.
  3. Once you have plenty of straw stamps made to share, squeeze red, white and blue paint onto their own respective plates. Place a few straw stamps with each color.
  4. Allow residents to choose between a variety of paper color – we stuck with the festive red, white and blue.
  5. Dip the straw into the paint then press onto the paper. You may have to use your fingers to help the “flaps” touch the paper. Once they touch the paper, lift the straw – you should be left with a beautiful firework! Layer with different colors to create a more dimensional effect.
  6. Allow to dry, hang and enjoy!
