Splatter Painting

Therapeutic Recreation Week Day #3

Splatter Painting
Splatter Painting

You will need:

  • Various Paints
  • Canvas or Paper
  • Paint Brushes
  • Cup
  • Paper Towels
  • Paper Plates

This activity can get pretty messy, so we recommend painting outside and wearing aprons! Set up tables for your residents to stand or sit at. You may even want to lay down a plastic table cloth. Give every resident a canvas, paper plate and cup of water. Provide paints and paintbrushes to share. Residents can squeeze whatever paint they want onto the plate and rinse their brush in their cup. Now for the messy part – dip your paintbrush in paint and fling it onto the canvas! Get creative and have fun! Some residents may even want to just paint, that’s fine too! A more hands-on activity would be finger painting! Whatever your residents decide to do, it’s sure to be a masterpiece!

Flag Day Windcatchers

Flag day is coming up this June 14th! Don’t miss out on our craft of the week – start collecting your supplies now! To celebrate Flag Day we created our very own windcatcher! Hang these babies outside and watch ‘em dance!

DIY Flag Day Windcatcher

You will need:

  • Red, White or Blue Construction Paper
  • Tape
  • Scissors
  • Adhesive foam stars
  • Red, White and Blue Ribbon
  • Hole Punch

To Begin:

  1. First, take your sheet of colored construction paper long ways and trim a strip of paper about 2 inches from the top. Set this strip aside.
  2. As shown in the video, take the larger piece of construction paper and roll it to make a cylinder – both ends should be touching. Secure with a piece of tape.
  3. Whip out the 2-inch strip you cut earlier and add a piece of tape to either end. Attach one side to the top of your cylinder and the other end directly across from it – this should form a handle.
  4. Next, using your hole punch, punch holes along the bottom about 2 inches apart from each other.
  5. Using your scissors and a ruler, measure and cut your red, white and blue ribbon into 12-inch strips. You want to have roughly the same amount, but enough to fit into the holes you just punched.
  6. Thread the ribbon through a hole, tie a knot in the middle and let the tails hang.
  7. Repeat step 6 while alternating ribbon colors to fill all of the holes punched.
  8. Finally, add adhesive foam stars, glitter or even sequins to decorate your wind catcher.
  9. Hang and enjoy!

Tie-Dye American Flag Shirts

Red, White and Blue Tie-Dye Shirt
Red, White and Blue Tie-Dye Shirt

It’s DIY Friday! Let’s join forces to create an army of tie-dye for Armed Forces Day! Did you know before President Harry S. Truman declared Armed Forces Day, each branch in the military had their own special day? Now the annual celebration commemorates all branches of the military at once! Here’s to all of our brave soldiers in every branch – Thank you for all that you do!

You Will Need:

  • A white cotton t-shirt
  • Rubber Bands
  • Blue & Red Tie Dye Mixture with Bottles (Accessible at Walmart or Michael’s)
  • Gloves
  • Two Plastic Bags
  • Container

To Begin:

1. Start with a clean white, cotton t-shirt (other fabrics have a hard time holding color). Lay your t-shirt out as wrinkle-free as possible.

2. Starting on one side of your t-shirt, under the armpit, begin to fold your t-shirt in 1-inch sections back and forth to look like an accordion.

3. Once you reach the other side of the t-shirt and the bottom half of your shirt is scrunched up, grab a rubber band and tie it around your shirt. Do this with as many rubber bands as needed to maintain its accordion shape.

4. You should be left with a tuft of fabric including the sleeves and collar. Take the fabric and ball it up. Wrap a few rubber bands around this part to keep its shape. You should be left with something like this:

5. Now that we’re all prepped, we can get to tie-dying! For these next couple of steps, you’re going to want to work outside.

6. Using the instructions on the tie-dye box, mix your dye.

7. On the accordion side of your t-shirt apply a liberal amount of red dye. Be careful not to get any on the top half of your shirt. We held the shirt over a paper bowl, squeezed dye onto the shirt. The bowl helped to catch any extra dye not absorbed.

8. Once the accordion is coated, take a plastic bag and tie it around that part of the shirt to keep it from touching anything.

9. On the top half of your shirt liberally cover it with blue dye.

10. Like the bottom half, tie a plastic bag over the top half of your shirt.

11. Place in a container to soak overnight.

12. When the shirt is dry, remove it from the bags and cut the rubber bands.

13. When you open it up you should be left with stars and stripes!

14. Wash your shirt in cold water and you’re ready for Armed Forces Day!
