To Begin:

  1. Start with a clean sheet of white paper. We used construction paper.
  2. Squeeze a decent amount of yellow paint onto your paper plate. On a separate plate squeeze a little bit of black paint.
  3. Next, using your bubble wrap, dip the bubble side of the bubble wrap into the yellow paint. You may need to use your paintbrush to brush some of the yellow paint onto the bubble wrap.
  4. Once your bubble wrap is painted and prepped, press the painted side against the white paper. When you peel back the bubble wrap, you should be left with a circular/hexagon pattern.
  5. Next, we’ll be using our bee stamp. We were lucky enough to have a bee stamp hand-made for us, but if necessary a trip to Michael’s might save you time.
  6. For this step, you can either use stamp ink or black paint like we did. Coat your stamp in ink or paint and decorate your honeycomb painting!

Clay n’ Play

Therapeutic Recreation Week Day #2

Clay n' Play
Clay n’ Play

You will need:

  • Play Doh or air-dry clay
  • Rolling Pins
  • Cookie Cutters
  • Parchment Paper

There’s something about squishing Play Doh and clay that’s so satisfying! To start your own molding stations, first lay down parchment paper at every seat, as well as a tub of clay or Play Doh. Provide rolling pins, cookie cutters and let your residents have fun! If you use air-dry clay your residents can paint and keep whatever they make. Play Doh, on the other hand, is great if you want to reuse it for another time.

Therapeutic Recreation Week

Therapeutic Recreation Week
Therapeutic Recreation Week

July 7th – July 13th

Therapeutic Recreation Week highlights the importance of engaging in activities that help with the recovery of healing people with various disabilities or illnesses. It can help keep a busy mind off of unnecessary stress that comes with having a disability.

Every day we will be providing a Therapeutic Recreational Activity for you to try with your residents at your own facility!

Recreational Therapy is used to help patients with disabilities and can even be prescribed by medical professionals as treatment, usually facilitated by a trained and certified individual. Recreational Therapy involves sports, arts, muscle relaxation techniques and even hobbies. It is designed to restore, remediate and rehabilitate a person’s level of motor functioning and independence in life activities. It promotes health and wellness as well as reduce or eliminate activity limitations.

Many rehabilitation centers and hospitals have an in-house recreation therapist who gives personalized assessments and works with a physician to create a recreational therapy plan that best suits the patient. This makes recreational therapy different than most therapies. Some interventions are individual and some are group based. But every therapy is tailored to the patient’s interests. This makes the therapy process meaningful and relevant.

Recreational Therapy is provided by qualified professionals known as Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists (CTRS). Recreational Therapists do their best to reduce depression, stress, and anxiety in their patients. They try to help them build confidence and socialize in their community.

How is Recreational Therapy Beneficial?

  • Gives Patients active, outcome-focused care
  • Enables general skill-developed treatment to home or community environments
  • Reduces the effects of disabilities
  • Provides treatment through cost-effective means
  • Addresses the whole person with a focus on enhancing independent functioning
  • Builds physical, social, cognitive and emotional domains
  • Trains people to identify and utilize community resources
  • Focuses on skills that carry over to day-to-day life

Tie-Dye American Flag Shirts

Red, White and Blue Tie-Dye Shirt
Red, White and Blue Tie-Dye Shirt

It’s DIY Friday! Let’s join forces to create an army of tie-dye for Armed Forces Day! Did you know before President Harry S. Truman declared Armed Forces Day, each branch in the military had their own special day? Now the annual celebration commemorates all branches of the military at once! Here’s to all of our brave soldiers in every branch – Thank you for all that you do!

You Will Need:

  • A white cotton t-shirt
  • Rubber Bands
  • Blue & Red Tie Dye Mixture with Bottles (Accessible at Walmart or Michael’s)
  • Gloves
  • Two Plastic Bags
  • Container

To Begin:

1. Start with a clean white, cotton t-shirt (other fabrics have a hard time holding color). Lay your t-shirt out as wrinkle-free as possible.

2. Starting on one side of your t-shirt, under the armpit, begin to fold your t-shirt in 1-inch sections back and forth to look like an accordion.

3. Once you reach the other side of the t-shirt and the bottom half of your shirt is scrunched up, grab a rubber band and tie it around your shirt. Do this with as many rubber bands as needed to maintain its accordion shape.

4. You should be left with a tuft of fabric including the sleeves and collar. Take the fabric and ball it up. Wrap a few rubber bands around this part to keep its shape. You should be left with something like this:

5. Now that we’re all prepped, we can get to tie-dying! For these next couple of steps, you’re going to want to work outside.

6. Using the instructions on the tie-dye box, mix your dye.

7. On the accordion side of your t-shirt apply a liberal amount of red dye. Be careful not to get any on the top half of your shirt. We held the shirt over a paper bowl, squeezed dye onto the shirt. The bowl helped to catch any extra dye not absorbed.

8. Once the accordion is coated, take a plastic bag and tie it around that part of the shirt to keep it from touching anything.

9. On the top half of your shirt liberally cover it with blue dye.

10. Like the bottom half, tie a plastic bag over the top half of your shirt.

11. Place in a container to soak overnight.

12. When the shirt is dry, remove it from the bags and cut the rubber bands.

13. When you open it up you should be left with stars and stripes!

14. Wash your shirt in cold water and you’re ready for Armed Forces Day!
