Writing Tips: Compose a Letter from the Director

This month, we have some tips on how to include a “Letter from the Executive Director” in your newsletters. Having your ED write a letter to residents is a great way to personalize your newsletter, share information, and build a connection with your community members.

For some the thought of writing an article brings dread, for others, excitement. Regardless, it can be difficult to decide what exactly to write about. Here are some ideas of what your Executive Director can talk about in their letter:

  • Does your community or corporation have a theme for the month? If so, talk about what the theme means to you or how it relates to the community.
  • Is there a particular holiday coming up that month? Reflect on what’s special about that holiday and how your community will celebrate it.
  • Have there been any recent outings or in-house events? Describe the occasion and what was special about it. Don’t forget to invite others to participate next time!
  • What goals or milestones has your community achieved? Highlight any key individuals who helped accomplish these goals, and introduce new goals that will be worked towards.

Thinking about making this a part of your next newsletter? Consider including these things:

  • A photo of the executive director! This can be anything from a professional portrait to a photo of the ED interacting with residents or staff. Either way, it’s always helpful to put a name to a face.
  • The title can be whatever you want! The go-to would be simply naming the article “Letter from the Executive Director,” and that’s perfectly fine, but why not liven it up? Get creative with it! Try alliterations, rhyming words or another attention-grabbing title.
