Craft your Newsletter: Photo Pointers

by | August 09, 2022

A picture is worth 1,000 words… or in this case, a beautifully designed newsletter! Here are some photo pointers to get you started!

Ready to take your newsletters to the next level? Let’s start by considering the types of pictures you provide us with. Are you including photos of residents or employees as part of a spotlight article? We’ve got some quick tips for how to take a clear and effective portrait photo. Is your newsletter filled with photos showing the excitement from last month? We also have some tips on how to capture the magic.

  1. Position the camera at the subject’s eye level or slightly above. The angle of the photo will determine how accurately the subject is depicted.
  2. Use natural lighting when you can and pay attention to shadows. A well-lit photo clearly and brightly highlights the star of the image. You will get better results if the light source is behind the camera, but in front of the subject.
  3. Don’t be afraid to get up close! You emphasize the subject by filling the frame with them and including less of the background (if the background isn’t important).
  4. Using a Smartphone? Try taking photos in Portrait Mode. This photography effect automatically focuses on the subject, and blurs out the background.
  5. Try taking an action shot at the next activity. The in-the-moment expressions make for unique and authentic photos that capture the experience.
  6. The best way to share a picture of a picture is by scanning it in. This way, the image is clear, flat and level – perfect for adding personal touches to a newsletter!

Photos add a lot of personality to your newsletters with not a lot of effort. Try to include at least a couple each month. Ideas for photos could be a Resident of the Month or Associate of the Month feature. Don’t be shy, get out there and snap a pic and put these photo pointers in play in your senior living newsletter.
