Holiday Classics: In the Meadow We Can Build a Snowman

by | December 21, 2021

Everyone is familiar with the ever-popular lyric from “Winter Wonderland.” But where exactly did the concept of building a snowman originate and how did it become a holiday classics?

Snowmen historically date back to medieval times. Their exact origins are unclear, but documentation of snowman imagery exists in the late 1300s. The first documented actual photograph of a snowman, however, was published in 1853.

Snowmen generally embody a sense of family fun. Children work with parents and grandparents to pack snow as tightly as possible, rolling it into three perfectly-sized balls: one for the head, one for the midsection and one for the lower region.

Generally the smallest ball is on top, with the midsection being larger and the lower section being the largest. Buttons, charcoal, carrots, scarves, hats, pipes and other accessories complete the snowman’s ensemble, and are also used in creating the snow figure’s face.

It’s an age-old routine that has peaked in popularity in European countries like Switzerland, but also in Northern regions of America. The largest snowman on record was created in Maine in 2008. In contrast, the smallest snowman on record is a 2009 product of London, England.
