Koi Fish

You Will Need:

  • Toilet Paper Tube
  • Construction Paper
  • Tissue Paper
  • Adhesive Google Eyes
  • Scissors
  • Pen
  • Glue/Mod Podge

To Begin:

  1. Start by folding your construction paper in half, hamburger-style. Repeat about 4 times or until your paper is too hard to fold.

2. Using a circular object, (we used our mod podge bottle) trace a circle onto the construction paper. It doesn’t have to be perfect! If you don’t have a mod podge bottle at hand, any cylinder with the diameter between an inch to 2 inches should work just fine.

3. Next, cut out the circle you just traced. You should be left with a bunch of circles! These circles will become scales for our koi fish!

Repeat steps 1-3 with other colors of construction paper.

4. Next, we’ll grab our paper tube and begin gluing down the “fish scales.” I started at one end of the tube, overlapping each circle to cover every bit of the tube. After I finished one row, I repeated the process on the row above.

5. When you finish covering most of your tube with circles, trim a 1-inch thick strip of construction paper (color of your choice) and glue it down on the other end of your tube. This will be the koi fish’s face.

6. Next, we’ll make the fins! Begin with a 2-inch wide strip of tissue paper. Fold and cut in half. You should be left with two equal halves. Fold those each in half. Stack the two halves on top of one another with the fold facing the same direction. With your scissors, trim your fins so that they look like the ones below:

7. For the tail, we’ll take a sheet of tissue paper, pinch from the middle and slide our hand upward to create a tissue bouquet.

8. For the final steps, you’ll slide the tissue paper with the narrow end into the paper tube, then glue down the fins to the side of your koi fish, and finally, we’ll top it off with self-adhesive google eyes!
