  • Hot Glue Gun

To Begin:

  1. Begin by pinching together the ends of the toilet paper roll as shown:

2. Next, using your black paint and paintbrush, paint the toilet paper roll black all over.

Toilet Paper Tube Koi Fish

Koi Fish

You Will Need:

  • Toilet Paper Tube
  • Construction Paper
  • Tissue Paper
  • Adhesive Google Eyes
  • Scissors
  • Pen
  • Glue/Mod Podge

To Begin:

  1. Start by folding your construction paper in half, hamburger-style. Repeat about 4 times or until your paper is too hard to fold.

2. Using a circular object, (we used our mod podge bottle) trace a circle onto the construction paper. It doesn’t have to be perfect! If you don’t have a mod podge bottle at hand, any cylinder with the diameter between an inch to 2 inches should work just fine.

3. Next, cut out the circle you just traced. You should be left with a bunch of circles! These circles will become scales for our koi fish!

Repeat steps 1-3 with other colors of construction paper.

4. Next, we’ll grab our paper tube and begin gluing down the “fish scales.” I started at one end of the tube, overlapping each circle to cover every bit of the tube. After I finished one row, I repeated the process on the row above.

5. When you finish covering most of your tube with circles, trim a 1-inch thick strip of construction paper (color of your choice) and glue it down on the other end of your tube. This will be the koi fish’s face.

6. Next, we’ll make the fins! Begin with a 2-inch wide strip of tissue paper. Fold and cut in half. You should be left with two equal halves. Fold those each in half. Stack the two halves on top of one another with the fold facing the same direction. With your scissors, trim your fins so that they look like the ones below:

7. For the tail, we’ll take a sheet of tissue paper, pinch from the middle and slide our hand upward to create a tissue bouquet.

8. For the final steps, you’ll slide the tissue paper with the narrow end into the paper tube, then glue down the fins to the side of your koi fish, and finally, we’ll top it off with self-adhesive google eyes!

To Begin:

  1. First, start by spreading a layer of peanut butter on your toilet paper roll using your knife.
  2. Next, pour the bird seed to fill the paper plate.
  3. Like a rolling pin, roll the peanut butter covered toilet paper roll in the seeds. The seeds will stick to the peanut butter coating it in seeds.
  4. Next cut a piece of twine or ribbon. String through the hole in your toilet paper roll and tie.
  5. Hang your bird feeders in a spot visible from the porch or window and enjoy a day filled with birds!

Cinco de Mayo Mini Piñatas

Cinco de Mayo Mini Piñatas
Cinco de Mayo Mini Piñatas

It’s that time again – DIY Friday! This week we will be making Mini Piñatas for Cinco de Mayo. For this cheap and easy DIY activity, you’re going to want to collect old toilet paper rolls and paper towel tubes! With Cinco de Mayo creeping around the corner, you can start saving now!

You will need

  • Toilet paper rolls or paper towel tubes
  • Wrapped candy of your choice
  • Colorful tissue paper
  • Glue or spray adhesive
  • Hole Punch
  • String
  • Scissors
  • Confetti or paper shreds

To Begin

1. Grab your toilet paper roll. Using your hole punch, punch a hole on one side of your tube and a second directly across from it.

2. Trim a piece of string or ribbon and thread through the holes you just punched.

3. With your toilet paper roll, pinch the hole punched end together. Fold down the flaps so that you can’t see inside the tube.

4. Tie off the string – this is to hang your piñata!

5. On the other end of your tube, fill with candy and confetti!

6. Pinch off the other end and press down the flaps so that your candy and confetti are sealed inside. If done properly, your piñata guts shouldn’t fall out!

7. Time to decorate your piñata! We decided to use colorful tissue paper from the dollar store to dress up our piñata, but you can use anything you’d like – glitter, paint, rhinestones, etc.

8. Using at least 3 different colors, cut your tissue paper into 2 inch x 6 inch rectangles.

9. Lay your tissue paper horizontally. With your scissors, make slits in your tissue paper about a half inch apart from one another.

10. When you have 3, 2 inch x 6 inch rectangles with slits, set them aside.

11. Apply glue to your paper towel roll – we used a spray adhesive found at the dollar store.
