painting pumpkins

Happy All Hallow’s Eve (Eve)! This DIY craft is painting pumpkins. Simple, but depending on your artistic level, a chance to be creative! Here at Corwin, we really enjoyed being able to sit down and get our creative juices flowing. 🎃 We have our costumes ready to go and are about to chow down on our Haunted potluck. We hope you all have a safe and Happy Halloween!

Resident Mummies

Resident Mummies
Resident Mummies!

Halloween is only a few weeks away! Get ready for this hilarious, interactive craft to include all of your residents in – Resident Mummies! Every-mummy will want to participate!

You Will Need:

  • Black Construction Paper
  • Scissors
  • Headshots of Residents
  • Glue Stick
  • White Packing Tape
  • Mummy Stencil
  • Pencil
  1. Begin by snapping photos of all of your residents; you’ll want a nice, clear headshot of everyone participating.
  2. Next, you’ll want to upload these to the computer and print them out to a reasonable size. You may have to play around with the “scale” option to scale your image down to an appropriate size. Use your best judgment.

Next, you’ll want to download and print the “Mummy Stencil” Printable below.

4. After you’ve printed your printable, you’ll want to cut it out. Lay it on top of a stack of black construction paper (as many pieces of paper as residents participating), and trace the stencil with your pencil.

5. With your stack in hand and your traced piece of paper on top, begin cutting them out with your scissors.

6. Give each of your residents a black mummy cutout and their corresponding photo of themselves. Have them cut their head out and glue it to the mummy with a glue stick.

7. With your packing tape, cut off 3, 6-inch strips, then cut those down the middle to give you 6 thin 6-inch strips. Do this for each resident.

8. Allow your residents to tape their mummy as they please. Trim or fold back any excess tape.

Hang your Mummy to scare away the monsters!

Resident Snow Globes

Resident Snow Globes

Happy Friday!! You’re going to love this fun, interactive craft!

You Will Need:

  • Printed Photo of you, your pet, or whatever you’d like in your snow globe.
  • Packing tape (Laminating Machine if you have one)
  • Smooth Surface Mason Jars
  • Clear Glue
  • Glitter
  • Confetti
  • Scissors
  • E6000

To Begin:

  1. First I printed out a picture of me front and back (the back-side mirrored) then cut to shape.
  2. For this next step, you can either laminate your cut-outs or do what we did and used packing tape!
  3. Lay your cut-out on a flat surface. With a few pieces of tape as long or wide as you need, lay them as flat as possible to the cut-out and table.
  4. Peel your cut-out up and flip it over.
  5. Next, repeat another layer of packing tape on the opposite side.
  6. You should be left with a sturdy, water-resistant image. Trim any excess tape off the cut-out.
  7. Grab your mason jar, fit your image inside of your jar and tape your image to the lip of the jar. Be sure some of the tape is wrapped around the outer lip so when the lid is screwed on it stays put.
  8. Next, fill the mason jar less than a third of the way with clear glue.
  9. Add glitter and confetti to your liking. Next, fill with water to the neck of the jar.
  10. Secure the lid, shake well, done!
  11. Once your jar is to your liking, glue the lid shut using industrial glue. I like to use E6000.
  12. Enjoy!!

Resident Chia Pets

Chia Pets

It’s DIY Friday!

Most of us have seen or heard of the infamous “Chia Pet.” For those of you who are unfamiliar with the term, “Chia” is a type of edible sprout. Chia Pets are American styled terracotta figurines used to sprout chia, where the chia sprouts grow within a couple of weeks to resemble the animal’s fur or hair. In this case, we’ll be growing our OWN chia-hair!

You Will Need:

  • Paper Cups
  • Soil
  • Chia Seeds
  • Water
  • Printed photos of your residents
  • Scissors
  • Glue

To Begin:

  1. First, start by taking pictures of your residents and printing them out – you may have to scale the image accordingly so that it will fit on the side of the paper cup.
  2. Have your residents cut out their face from the photo you printed of them, then glue it to the side of their cup.

3. Next, have your residents fill their cup up with soil.

4. Using your finger, poke a hole in the center of your cup of soil. Fill the hole with chia seeds and cover.

5. Water your chia pet and watch it grow wild and crazy chia-hair! You should see sprouts within 3 days. Water when the soil is dry and rotate your chia pet daily!
