It’s DIY Friday! For this week’s craft, we’ll be making quick and easy bird feeders! This activity is quite simple using only a handful of supplies to make – in fact, you should be able to find some of your supplies in the bathroom. 🚽

So start saving your toilet paper rolls (they come in handy for tons of crafts) recycling doesn’t have to be boring. We even have a bin dedicated to collecting our rolls! ♻️

To Begin:

  1. First, start by spreading a layer of peanut butter on your toilet paper roll using your knife.
  2. Next, pour the bird seed to fill the paper plate.
  3. Like a rolling pin, roll the peanut butter covered toilet paper roll in the seeds. The seeds will stick to the peanut butter coating it in seeds.
  4. Next cut a piece of twine or ribbon. String through the hole in your toilet paper roll and tie.

Tissue Paper Flowers

Are you ready for Spring?

Learn to make these tissue paper flowers with your residents!

You Will Need:

  • Tissue Paper (Assorted Colors)
  • Stapler
  • Scissors
  • Skewers
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Vase

To Begin:

  1. Start with a single sheet of tissue paper. Cut this sheet of paper into at least 4 sections of equal length and width.
  2. Neatly stack your small sheets of tissue paper one on top of the other.
  3. Fold the shortest side about an inch to two inches in. Accordion fold the tissue paper.
  4. Depending on how large you want your flower you can either cut the paper in half (as shown in the video), leave it as-is, or trim it to make it the perfect size.
  5. Once your accordion paper is the perfect length, you’ll want to staple it in the middle.
  6. Using your scissors, round the edges of the paper, make them pointy, or even shred the ends. (example below)

7. Begin separating the sheets of tissue paper and ruffling up the petals of your flower.

8. Next, grab a skewer. Using your hot glue gun, add a dab of glue to the sharp end. Stick this end at the bottom of your flower. (I also recommend using green plant tape to wrap around the skewer to make it look like an actual stem.)

9. With your vase handy, fill with flowers! If your vase is transparent try adding rocks, marbles, or even a brown paper bag to hide the stems.

10. You’re Finished! Decorate your countertops with vases of flowers from your residents!

Chinese New Year Paper Lanterns

The New Year is right around the corner, but so is the Chinese New Year!

Create these festive Chinese New Year Paper Lanterns with everyone at your facility!

Chinese New Year Paper Lanterns

You Will Need:

  • Two different colored pieces of construction paper (We used the festive Red & Yellow, but you can choose whichever colors you’d like)
  • Scissors
  • Tape

To Begin:

  1. Select the paper color you would like to be the outside of your lantern. Lay the paper down flat. Trim off a half-inch wide piece of paper like the one pictured below. Set the half-inch wide piece aside.
Trim a half inch piece of paper

2. With the larger piece of paper, fold it in half.

Fold in half.

3. Using a pencil and a ruler draw a line length-wise on the open-side of your folded piece of paper about half an inch to an inch thick.

Draw inch-wide line on the open end of folded piece of paper.

4. With your marked, folded piece of paper in hand, grab your scissors and cut half-inch thick lines down the folded side of the paper. Don’t cut the paper all the way – stop at the line you marked previously. Set aside.

Cut half-inch sections from the folded-side and stop at the line you just drew.

5. With your second color paper, lay it out flat. With the short end in hand, roll the piece of paper to the other end, then tape to secure. This should create a roll.

6. Lay your “roll” on top of the cut piece of paper – align the edges and roll the cut piece of paper around the “roll.” Tape to secure the ends. Repeat on the opposite end.

Secure ends.

7. You should be left with something that looks a little like this:

Lantern without Handle

8. Grab the inch-wide slip of paper you trimmed off earlier. With a couple of pieces of tape, place them on the ends of the slip. Secure to the lantern to create a handle.

10. Ta-da! Ready for the new year! Hang and celebrate!

Cupcake Liner Fish

Happy DIY-Day! It’s time to get crafty!

Using Cupcake Liners, we’ll make a lovely underwater sea-scape to create Cupcake Liner Fish!

Cupcake Liner Fish
Cupcake Liner Fish

You Will Need:

  • Assorted Cupcake Liners
  • White and Blue Construction Paper
  • String or Twine
  • Popsicle Stick
  • Glue
  • Google Eyes
  • Scissors
  • Marker

To Begin:

  1. Start by first trimming a few inches off of the top of your blue piece of construction paper. I cut my paper in the form of a wave to look like water. Your paper should look like the one below:

2. Next, using whatever glue that is readily available, glue down the blue piece of construction paper to the white piece of paper.

3. Grab your favorite color/pattern cupcake liner. Lay it face down, then press it down so that it lays flat. Using your glue, glue down the cupcake liner to the blue paper. This will be the body of our fish.

4. Grab another cupcake liner to complement the one you’ve just glued down. Flatten it out, fold it in half, then in half again. This will be our fishtail.

5. Apply a dab of glue to the corner of your folded cupcake liner, carefully lift up the liner that is already glued down and press the folded liner down to rest as the fishtail.

6. Time to make the fins: Start with another flattened cupcake liner, fold in half, then again, then AGAIN. Using your scissors, cut your cupcake liner in half, then in half again. Using one of these triangles, apply a little glue and attach the fins. While we’re adding the finishing touches to our fish, we’ll go ahead and add the self-adhesive google eyes and draw a mouth with a marker.

7. Last but not least, we’ll tie the string/twine we’ve been holding onto to our popsicle stick to make a fishing pole! Glue the popsicle stick down to your piece of artwork – I let the string hang.

Toilet Paper Tube Koi Fish

Koi Fish

You Will Need:

  • Toilet Paper Tube
  • Construction Paper
  • Tissue Paper
  • Adhesive Google Eyes
  • Scissors
  • Pen
  • Glue/Mod Podge

To Begin:

  1. Start by folding your construction paper in half, hamburger-style. Repeat about 4 times or until your paper is too hard to fold.
Koi Fish

2. Using a circular object, (we used our mod podge bottle) trace a circle onto the construction paper. It doesn’t have to be perfect! If you don’t have a mod podge bottle at hand, any cylinder with the diameter between an inch to 2 inches should work just fine.

3. Next, cut out the circle you just traced. You should be left with a bunch of circles! These circles will become scales for our koi fish!

Repeat steps 1-3 with other colors of construction paper.

4. Next, we’ll grab our paper tube and begin gluing down the “fish scales.” I started at one end of the tube, overlapping each circle to cover every bit of the tube. After I finished one row, I repeated the process on the row above.

5. When you finish covering most of your tube with circles, trim a 1-inch thick strip of construction paper (color of your choice) and glue it down on the other end of your tube. This will be the koi fish’s face.

6. Next, we’ll make the fins! Begin with a 2-inch wide strip of tissue paper. Fold and cut in half. You should be left with two equal halves. Fold those each in half. Stack the two halves on top of one another with the fold facing the same direction. With your scissors, trim your fins so that they look like the ones below:

7. For the tail, we’ll take a sheet of tissue paper, pinch from the middle and slide our hand upward to create a tissue bouquet.

8. For the final steps, you’ll slide the tissue paper with the narrow end into the paper tube, then glue down the fins to the side of your koi fish, and finally, we’ll top it off with self-adhesive google eyes!
