Cupcake Liner Fish

Happy DIY-Day! It’s time to get crafty!

Using Cupcake Liners, we’ll make a lovely underwater sea-scape to create Cupcake Liner Fish!

You Will Need:

  • Assorted Cupcake Liners
  • White and Blue Construction Paper
  • String or Twine
  • Popsicle Stick
  • Glue
  • Google Eyes
  • Scissors
  • Marker

To Begin:

  1. Start by first trimming a few inches off of the top of your blue piece of construction paper. I cut my paper in the form of a wave to look like water. Your paper should look like the one below:

2. Next, using whatever glue that is readily available, glue down the blue piece of construction paper to the white piece of paper.

3. Grab your favorite color/pattern cupcake liner. Lay it face down, then press it down so that it lays flat. Using your glue, glue down the cupcake liner to the blue paper. This will be the body of our fish.

4. Grab another cupcake liner to complement the one you’ve just glued down. Flatten it out, fold it in half, then in half again. This will be our fishtail.

5. Apply a dab of glue to the corner of your folded cupcake liner, carefully lift up the liner that is already glued down and press the folded liner down to rest as the fishtail.

6. Time to make the fins: Start with another flattened cupcake liner, fold in half, then again, then AGAIN. Using your scissors, cut your cupcake liner in half, then in half again. Using one of these triangles, apply a little glue and attach the fins. While we’re adding the finishing touches to our fish, we’ll go ahead and add the self-adhesive google eyes and draw a mouth with a marker.

7. Last but not least, we’ll tie the string/twine we’ve been holding onto to our popsicle stick to make a fishing pole! Glue the popsicle stick down to your piece of artwork – I let the string hang.

Splatter Painting

Therapeutic Recreation Week Day #3

Splatter Painting
Splatter Painting

You will need:

  • Various Paints
  • Canvas or Paper
  • Paint Brushes
  • Cup
  • Paper Towels
  • Paper Plates

This activity can get pretty messy, so we recommend painting outside and wearing aprons! Set up tables for your residents to stand or sit at. You may even want to lay down a plastic table cloth. Give every resident a canvas, paper plate and cup of water. Provide paints and paintbrushes to share. Residents can squeeze whatever paint they want onto the plate and rinse their brush in their cup. Now for the messy part – dip your paintbrush in paint and fling it onto the canvas! Get creative and have fun! Some residents may even want to just paint, that’s fine too! A more hands-on activity would be finger painting! Whatever your residents decide to do, it’s sure to be a masterpiece!

Make Slime!

Therapeutic Recreation Week Day #5

Elmer’s Slime Kit

Playing with slime is a sensory play activity allowing adults and children to utilize and understand all five senses. When several senses are stimulated at once, creativity and learning are built through exploration. Sensory play also encourages development of coordination and fine motor skills making it a great recreational activity for everyone to enjoy! Making your own is easy – we recommend making some with all of your residents!

You Will Need:

  • Elmer’s Slime Kit (available at Walmart)
    • Includes Glitter Glue
    • Includes “Magic Solution”
  • Extra Glitter
  • Mixing Bowl
  • Stirring Stick

To Begin:

  1. Begin By dumping the entire bottle of glitter glue into your mixing bowl.
  2. Next, add extra glitter if you wish.
  3. Stir thoroughly.
  4. Next, add the “Magic Solution.” If you can’t find the slime kit with the included “magic solution” Contact Cleaning Solution works just the same!
  5. Mix well.
  6. Allow 5-10 minutes to set – it’ll be extremely sticky and hard to manipulate if you try to play with it right away.
  7. Store in a small Ziploc container or bag to enjoy at any moment!
