Resident Chia Pets

Chia Pets
Chia Pets

It’s DIY Friday!

Most of us have seen or heard of the infamous “Chia Pet.” For those of you who are unfamiliar with the term, “Chia” is a type of edible sprout. Chia Pets are American styled terracotta figurines used to sprout chia, where the chia sprouts grow within a couple of weeks to resemble the animal’s fur or hair. In this case, we’ll be growing our OWN chia-hair!

You Will Need:

  • Paper Cups
  • Soil
  • Chia Seeds
  • Water
  • Printed photos of your residents
  • Scissors
  • Glue

To Begin:

  1. First, start by taking pictures of your residents and printing them out – you may have to scale the image accordingly so that it will fit on the side of the paper cup.
  2. Have your residents cut out their face from the photo you printed of them, then glue it to the side of their cup.

3. Next, have your residents fill their cup up with soil.

4. Using your finger, poke a hole in the center of your cup of soil. Fill the hole with chia seeds and cover.

5. Water your chia pet and watch it grow wild and crazy chia-hair! You should see sprouts within 3 days. Water when the soil is dry and rotate your chia pet daily!

Dollar Tree Fall Candle Jars

Dollar Tree Fall Candle Jars
Dollar Tree Fall Candle Jars

The Dollar Tree has tons of reasonably priced craft supplies and is the perfect place to stock up for craft day! Find all you need for today’s craft at your local store. Today we will be making Fall Candle Jars made from plastic (or real) leaves, mod podge, and your favorite shaped glass jar among the many glass jars at the Dollar Tree.

Supplies
Supplies

You Will Need:

  • Plastic (or real) Leaves
  • Glass Jar
  • Mod Podge
  • Paint Brush
  • Battery Powered Tea Light Candle

To Begin:

  1. Once you’ve picked your favorite shaped jar, decide whether or not you would like a real, or battery-powered candle. If you choose battery-powered then you can continue by coating the INSIDE of your jar in mod podge. If you choose a real candle, then you can continue by coating the OUTSIDE of your jar in mod podge. This is strictly for fire safety precautions.
  2. Next, begin carefully placing your leaves to the mod podge side of your jar. Use your paintbrush to coat the leaves and smooth out any wrinkles. Continue by covering the entire jar in leaves.
  3. Once your jar is covered, you can trim off any excess leaves and wait patiently overnight for your jar to dry completely.
  4. Now that the jar has dried, you may place the candle of your choice inside and enjoy!

Sharpie Coasters

Sharpie Coasters

You will need:

To Begin:

  1. Start by prepping your area: Lay down napkins to lay your tile on and clean your tile of any debris.
Lay down paper towels and clean tile.

2. Using an array of colors or a select few, freely and randomly color your tile with Sharpie.

3. By carefully using your straw, dip the end into the 91% Isopropyl Alcohol. Allow the alcohol drips to randomly drip onto your colorful tile canvas. But careful — too much and all of your color will run together and off the tile! I like to take my time with this process and allow the spots to dry before adding more. Get creative with it! Use your straw to even blow the color around before it dries!

4. If you’re like me and only have regular Sharpies to experiment with, a can of Krylon Clear Glaze (available at Wal-mart) will seal your tiles without a problem! Allow a few hours for the Sharpie to dry then spray your tile with the clear glaze finish. Your Sharpie Coasters will be ready to use in no time!

Cupcake Liner Fish

Happy DIY-Day! It’s time to get crafty!

Using Cupcake Liners, we’ll make a lovely underwater sea-scape to create Cupcake Liner Fish!

Cupcake Liner Fish

You Will Need:

  • Assorted Cupcake Liners
  • White and Blue Construction Paper
  • String or Twine
  • Popsicle Stick
  • Glue
  • Google Eyes
  • Scissors
  • Marker

To Begin:

  1. Start by first trimming a few inches off of the top of your blue piece of construction paper. I cut my paper in the form of a wave to look like water. Your paper should look like the one below:

2. Next, using whatever glue that is readily available, glue down the blue piece of construction paper to the white piece of paper.

3. Grab your favorite color/pattern cupcake liner. Lay it face down, then press it down so that it lays flat. Using your glue, glue down the cupcake liner to the blue paper. This will be the body of our fish.

4. Grab another cupcake liner to complement the one you’ve just glued down. Flatten it out, fold it in half, then in half again. This will be our fishtail.

5. Apply a dab of glue to the corner of your folded cupcake liner, carefully lift up the liner that is already glued down and press the folded liner down to rest as the fishtail.

6. Time to make the fins: Start with another flattened cupcake liner, fold in half, then again, then AGAIN. Using your scissors, cut your cupcake liner in half, then in half again. Using one of these triangles, apply a little glue and attach the fins. While we’re adding the finishing touches to our fish, we’ll go ahead and add the self-adhesive google eyes and draw a mouth with a marker.

7. Last but not least, we’ll tie the string/twine we’ve been holding onto to our popsicle stick to make a fishing pole! Glue the popsicle stick down to your piece of artwork – I let the string hang.

To Begin:

  1. Start with a clean sheet of white paper. We used construction paper.
  2. Squeeze a decent amount of yellow paint onto your paper plate. On a separate plate squeeze a little bit of black paint.
  3. Next, using your bubble wrap, dip the bubble side of the bubble wrap into the yellow paint. You may need to use your paintbrush to brush some of the yellow paint onto the bubble wrap.
  4. Once your bubble wrap is painted and prepped, press the painted side against the white paper. When you peel back the bubble wrap, you should be left with a circular/hexagon pattern.
  5. Next, we’ll be using our bee stamp. We were lucky enough to have a bee stamp hand-made for us, but if necessary a trip to Michael’s might save you time.
  6. For this step, you can either use stamp ink or black paint like we did. Coat your stamp in ink or paint and decorate your honeycomb painting!
